Instructions

Observe a classroom lesson and apply step 1 of the Observation Framework you have learned in class.  Use the table below to type your observations.

As you complete this task, make sure you follow the following prompts:

Learning Goal(s) and Lesson Parts
What is the main learning goal of this lesson?
What are the main parts of this lesson?  How do they relate to each other and to the lesson goal(s)?

Lessons typically can be divided into parts, each of which may have a different sub-goal or sub-goals.  A transition from one part to the next may be indicated by a shift in the organization (e.g., from whole class to small groups), or a shift in task or activity (e.g., from listening to the teacher explain how to do something, to then working on a worksheet).  Often transitions are marked by something that the teacher says (e.g., "Take out your notebooks.")

Divide the lesson into parts and indicate: (a) the time each part started; (b) a label that summarizes each part's activities (e.g., review of the formula to calculate the area of a triangle; introduction to the new topic); (c) a brief description of the main activity; (d) a brief description of the goal of each part and its relation to the main goal of the lesson.
