Naming Your Files

You can avoid many problems by naming your files using the following format: Filename.extension
  • The extension consists of a period (.) and a three-letter abbreviation that tells what software program created the file or what format the file was saved in.
  • For example, a lesson plan created in Microsoft word could be named: My Lesson Plan.doc
  • By adding the correct extension, a document can be recognized more easily by both Macintosh and PC computers and if the computer has the appropriate software, the document can be opened. In addition, adding the correct extension to documents can make them more easily opened when sent as email attachments.
  • Common extensions

  .doc Microsoft Word
  .mov QuickTime movie
.pdf Portable Document Format (Adobe Acrobat)
  .ppt Microsoft Powerpoint
  .rtf Rich Text Format document
  .stk Hyperstudio
  .txt Text only document
  .xls Microsoft Excel
  • Other extensions include those for graphics (.tif, .jpg, .pct) and for sound (.aif, .wav, .mp3).
